During the Penn State scandal, for some reason people thought it was funny to point out that my last name is only one letter away from “Sandusky.” So as a public service, I will point out that Zakir Hussain’s name is one letter away from “Hussein.” Which means, no relation.
Believe it or not, I don’t usually go in for 10+-minute instrumental drones. But any friend of George Harrison’s is a friend of mine.
Back when “world music” was a thing (anybody here old enough to remember that?), the RealWorld label (anybody remember them?) put out a sampler compilation of music from around the globe. My favorite track by far was the one by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. It was a 14-minute chanted prayer, repeated over and over at increasing speed. In other words: Awesome.
