Dinah Washington

Dinah Washington has this tough, gravelly voice and sang all these sweet, pillowy songs. Proof that back when singers could actually SING, you could surround them with violins and lush production and they still sounded awesome. Don’t get me started …

Carmen McRae

An ex of my friend Pete claimed that Carmen McRae was his favorite jazz singer. We’re pretty sure he just picked her because it made him feel cool to name someone a little off the beaten path. He was a weirdo.

Billie Holiday

This list was starting to feel a little pop/rock heavy, but with Bessie, Betty, and now Billie in a row, I guess things are balancing out. There are times when I literally can’t listen to Billie Holiday—there’s so much pain there, it’s kind of overwhelming.

Betty Carter

I’ve only written two fan letters in my life. One was to Betty Carter. I’ve also only seen one artist live more than once in my life. You guessed it: Betty Carter (4 times, I think). Her voice ain’t pretty, but … damn. RIP Betty Carter.

Abbey Lincoln

The only time I saw Abbey Lincoln live, she spent most of her time yelling at the band. I think she was drunk. Nonetheless, she is amazing. This one is for Cedric, who reminded me that “Abbey” comes before “AC/DC.”
