I always thought X was such as simple yet edgy and cool name for a band. Then I found out the lead singer’s name is Exene, which makes it seem kind of like cheating.
During my junior year, when I lived with two Daves (not to be confused with my senior year, when I lived with two completely different Daves), black Dave (not to be confused with Korean Dave) busted on me for missing Wynton Marsalis performing on campus, saying I was missing “a legend in the making.” He was probably right, but on the other hand, Korean Dave’s girlfriend was a whiz at doctoring ramen to make it taste gourmet, so on balance I think I made out OK.
Why rap groups are awesome: Because they come up with album titles like Enter the Wu-Tang … the 36 Chambers. What does that even mean?
Did you know Woody Guthrie’s “Do-Re-Mi” is not the song from The Sound of Music? I’ll bet Julie Andrews was really bummed when she found that out.
The one who isn’t Waylon Jennings. Also: Only artist to perform duets with both Joni Mitchell and … Julio Iglesias?
“We’re the meat group.”
“The who?”
“No, the meat group.”
If you get that reference … well, you’re pretty old.
I don’t really like Weather Report, so all I’ll say about them is Wayne Shorter probably picked the name so he and the group would appear next to each other on lists like these. On the other hand: Quincy Jones did a hip-hop version of “Birdland” (featuring vocals from both Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, because … huh?) that was Daveon’s favorite song for a while, so credit to Weather Report for coming up with the tune in the first place.
Many people know Wayne Shorter from his time with Miles Davis, or as a founding member of Weather Report. I know him as the musician about whom Joni Mitchell said: “Emotionally, he’s a better player than John Coltrane.” Which … you know how sometimes musicians should just stick to their music? That was one of those times.
The one who isn’t Willie Nelson.
