Things I resent, part 1,000,000. Children of the 50s got to listen to Sam Cooke originals in all their gritty, gravelly glory. As a child of the 70s, I was stuck with covers by wispy white folkies. Unfair! (Exception: The Spinners’ disco cover of “Cupid,” which was awesome.)
Thank you Joe for bringing back some cherished memories! The first time I heard “ A Change is Gonna Come” I knew instantly that I had to listening to the whole Sam Cooke collection and I was never disappointed. He is the only permanent fixture in my ever changing list of favourite artists.

In the US he is somewhat “forgotten” but he really laid the foundation for so much of the soul and pop music that followed. Without Sam Cooke, no Marvin Gaye … Otis Redding … Michael Jackson … Stevie Wonder … the list
